VRow

Oliver Queck
VRow is a prototype that integrates a virtual reality (VR) system with a fitness rowing machine to explore immersive exercise experiences. While most existing VR fitness applications focus on stationary bikes, VRow investigates rowing as a more natural and motion-compatible alternative for virtual environments. The prototype features a stereoscopic VR game that provides engaging visual feedback, goal-oriented gameplay, and interactive controls tied to the rowing machine’s movements. Users can accelerate or steer a virtual boat by adjusting their rowing technique, promoting correct form and enhancing immersion. The system leverages gamification to increase motivation, reduce monotony in home or gym workouts, and encourage longer, more frequent training sessions. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of the VRow system and its potential to enhance fitness through engaging, game-like VR experiences.
