Magic Map

Anastasiia Goncharenko, Paula Nuber
In order to provide players and game masters of tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons with visual aid during combat gameplay we created the project Magic Map. We provide seven different ArUco Markers that can be placed on a screen functioning as the battle map on the table. We use OpenCV to track the position and rotation of these markers to then draw visualizations directly on the map screen using pygame. Seven visualizations were implemented, aiming to encompass many common scenarios in tabletop RPG combat. In order to assess the usability of our prototype we conducted a formative user study with four participants who rated the project highly on the System Usability Scale and gave feedback to which visualizations they found most helpful. Building upon this we suggest further possible improvements to the Magic Map.
