Phone Tilt

Fasil Negash

This research project seeks to find a solution that makes it more comfortable to use a large screen smartphone with one hand. I use the touch gesture in combination with the flip motion to activate an interface that brings the far to reach icons near the thumb. Smartphones have several input sensors including the gyroscope sensor, we use the gyroscope sensor moderated by touch gesture to allow the one-handed user to quickly and comfortably access icons.

In the research, I create a prototype app with dummy smartphone home screen populated with icons. We compare the time taken to access icons on the upper side of the screen using the phone tilt mode and using the control mode.

We find that it is faster to access the far to reach icons with the phone tilt mode.
